Barney

Pets have a way of snuggling into your heart. Then stealing it. And finally breaking it.

Yesterday, we said good-bye to our Barney.

He was my Supermodel

He appreciated all knitted things

and he would even help me knit.

Guard Cat Barney also watched over the stash.

Take care, sweet boy. May you be in a place full of sunbeams and toys.

Erin go Almost There

Only about two more inches and this Erin go Knittin' Scarf will be Parade ready!

So I won't be the one marching up 5th Avenue on Tuesday with needles in hand.

Have a good one, everyone!

Erin go Knittin' Scarf

Thanks, everybody, for your scarf suggestions. They were all great and I'll be keeping them in mind for future projects.

However, I ended up flipping through my binder of patterns and found one that suited the look and speed I wanted.

From the Fall 2007 Interweave Knits--Elfin Scarf by Cathy Carron.

Since I'm on a deadline for March 17th, I've been knitting every free moment I have. Usually I do chores and take breaks for knitting. Now I'm knitting and taking a break for chores.

Chores? Who am I kidding? Chores are on the back burner this week.

The Erin go Knittin' Scarf aka the Marchin' in the Paddy's Day Parade Must Finish ASAP Scarf so far:

OK, break time over. Must go knit.

E is for

having an egg cream at Eisenberg's.

Not many of these places left in NYC--

The little hole-in-the wall lunch counter. Eisenberg's has been around for eighty years. Walk inside and you're hit with the kitschy decor. But this isn't manufactured kitsch--this is the real thing.

You want an organic arugula and mozzarella panini-- substitute pesto for the honey mustard? Well, you won't get it at Eisenberg's.

But if you want a lox and onion omelet, a tuna salad, a pastrami on rye, a grilled cheese with tomato or some sour pickles--then go take a seat on a squeaky swivel stool at Eisenberg's.

And to drink? You can have coffee or a Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray Tonic. But make sure to top the meal off with an egg cream!

With the disappearance of lunch counters and candy store soda fountains, the authentic chocolate egg cream is another relic from the past.

What's an egg cream? The name doesn't give it away since it contains neither eggs nor cream.

Fox's U Bet Chocolate Syrup, a splash of cold whole milk and seltzer from a soda fountain spigot or from a siphon bottle. (Not Hershey's Syrup, not Canadian Dry bottled seltzer, not skim milk.)

Stir it all together. Chocolate and foam! Heaven in a glass!

It's not to be sipped slowly--gulp it down!

Delicious!

New Yorkers are passionate about their egg creams! Native New Yorker Lou Reed even sang about them:

Erin go Knittin'

At some point, way back when, I joined a Sundara's sock club or two. I just love the yarn and like getting these surprise packages every few months.

Look at the luscious stuff that came today:

Here's the funny thing. Twenty minutes before this yarn was delivered, I was telling the hubster that I wish I had some kelly green yarn in my stash. I'll be marching this March 17 up 5th Avenue and have nothing to declare my Irishness. ***

Since I'll be marching with a serious group of folks, we've been instructed to dress "tastefully." What wouldn't be more tasteful and tasty than a handmade kelly green scarf?

Look at the yarn on the right--it's labelled "sour apples." But I think it's my "Erin go Knittin'" yarn!

That's 350 yards. Enough for a scarf. I need an easy peasy pattern. Mistake rib perhaps? Something I can finish in eight days. I need some suggestions FAST!

***OK, my long-time readers may remember a pair of green socks I made a few years ago. But, they're not kelly green. To march in the Parade one needs to flaunt some kelly green. And, no, I don't want to knit socks. I'm a slooooow knitter--I'd need more that 8 days to make even one sock!

Marching into Spring

Well, not yet!

Barney says, "What is this stuff?!"
